A busy year for Parks & Recreation
This has been a very big year for the Parks and Recreation Department in Saco. Attendance in all programs has increased tremendously. Our summer camps began on June 23 with over 400 participants, the largest ever in our summer camps.
This is the first year we have had to impose a cap on the number of participants in our two larger camps, the "Summer Adventurer" and "Pepperell". Both camps were capped at 150 children. This was a decision that we did not make lightly. We do not want to restrict any child attending our programs. With staffing already in place for the summer, safety for those already enrolled in the program was paramount. The decision to cap the two larger camps was based on our need for safety for the participants as well as available space within the schools we are using.
The enrollment fees which we charge for our two larger camps have remained virtually unchanged over the last three years as have our after school fees. With that said our enrollment numbers in all areas are up and again for the third year in a row we have exceeded mandated revenue projections. This year we will be putting over $400,000 into the General Fund for Saco. Our programs fee structure is still at or below the market price with surrounding communities.
Also as an additional part of Parks and Recreation our department by City code is mandated to care for the trees of the community located in the City's right of way. If you have and questions about trees be they City or private, located in the City please send your questions our way. We have two licensed Arborists on staff that will be more than happy to address your questions and concerns.
As summer moves into full swing we are in hopes of meeting all your family's needs for Recreational programming throughout the upcoming year. If you have any questions for our department or programming ideas, please do not hesitate to let us know your feelings, concerns or ideas. We can be contacted at 283-3139 or by email at parksandrec@sacomaine.org.
