Changes in Dog Licensing

The State of Maine implemented a new program on January 2008 requiring Veterinarians to forward copies of all Rabies Certificates to the Animal Welfare Department in Augusta. The Animal Welfare Department then forwards this information to all municipal Clerks. Municipal Clerks verify to see if the dog(s) are registered in their communities. If the dog(s) is not licensed the information is submitted to the Animal Control Officer of that municipality. Saco has received, to date, approximately 650 certificates from the State. Upon verification of the status of licensing, this office has been required to submit approximately 500 documents, of unlicensed dogs, to the Animal Control Officer who must contact the owners. Residents who do not comply with State Law may be summoned to Court to ensure compliance.

Dog must be license before they are six (6) months old, or if older than six (6) months, then within 10 days of ownership in order to avoid a $15.00 late fee.

Unfortunately, when our residents are contacted by the dog officer, there is an additional $15.00 late fee that must be paid in addition to the licensing fee. In order to avoid the penalty it is requested that dog owners license their pets between Nov. 1 and January 30th of each year. A valid rabies certificate is required at the time of licensing.

Your cooperation regarding this matter is greatly appreciated.
