8,000 energy eaving bulbs distributed by city
More than 7000 voters who expressed their political preference in the ballot box on November 4 went away with a compact fluorescent light bulb. Each bulb is expected to save about $77 in its 10,000 hour lifetime.

The City still has about 1000 bulbs, which are now being given at the counter with each transaction in the City Clerk and Finance offices. Energy conservation is increasingly important with the high cost of fuel and electricity today. In a letter handed out with the light bulbs, Mayor Ron Michaud explained why conservation could be especially important to some Saco residents:

"As you may have heard, some of our neighbors are facing the very real possibility that their neighborhoods will be negatively impacted by a Central Maine Power Company (CMP) proposal to increase the size and number of power lines. CMP has argued that our ever-increasing use of electricity necessitates this expansion. The city has argued and continues to argue that energy conservation will not only eliminate the need for the power line expansion but will save money for all of us. "

Saco was recently named Maine's Greenest City by Going Green Magazine. The compact light bulb initiative is one of several recent green initiatives by the city. Lowe's Home Center of Biddeford assisted the city with the program, which was managed by assistant code enforcement officer Mark Mitchell.
